With the value of gold so high it’s true to say that the more humble items of gold jewellery really do struggle to be worth more than their actual weight in gold. Commonly we buy large handfuls of 9ct gold jewellery of all kinds and it heads straight for the melting pot.
But what about the better items – what becomes of them? Well this is a complicated question which would require reams of detailed explanation but in the interests of brevity we would usually counsel that, if you have items of jewellery mounted in at least 18ct gold settings then the gemstones that they are garnished with tend to be better quality as is the overall construction of the item. It’s at this point that you may have something worth more than the sum of it’s parts that might be worth more than it’s weight in scrap gold.
But even then getting at it’s value is a challenge. Selling it to a dealer or by auction quite often can send you straight back to it’s scrap value as this is the point a dealer would look to underwrite his purchase; safe in the knowledge that he can scrap it and get his money back if it remains unsold. Likewise, sending it to auction invites fees for both seller and buyer which suppresses not only the price paid but erodes the amount you get in your hand.
We can help with this – we are blessed with access to years of experience and access to specialist buyers who are constantly seeking specific items. It is our job to try and place the right item with the right dealer. It’s not easy but we quite often create the holy trinity of a better than scrap price for the seller, a happy dealer, collector or individual who has not paid auction fees and a reasonable fee on our side for providing a great service.
So, if you have a high quality item to sell in the Plymouth, South Hams, South East Cornwall or South West Devon areas then please get in touch.
