Rule Britannia’s!

With the value of gold so high it’s true to say that the more humble items of gold jewellery really do struggle to be worth more than their actual weight in gold. Commonly we buy large handfuls of 9ct gold jewellery of all kinds and it heads straight for the melting pot.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall what is your favourite gold investment of them all?” This is the question we are asked time after time, though admittedly not in fairy tale language! And whilst it remains very much a matter of opinion, we always give the same answer that the Britannia really does rule the investment waves. Though please bear in mind that this is an opinion piece and not actual investment advice!

Simply put the gold Britannia is a British coin of the realm sporting gleaming credentials. A “full” Britannia is made of one troy ounce of fine gold’ is instantly recognisable, very rarely (currently) faked and remains free of VAT and capital gains tax in the UK. Easy to test for authenticity, highly negotiable and a low margin product for dealers means that your gold investment in Britannia’s is about as good as it can be on any measure of practicality and economy. On top of that they are quite lush and tactile to hold and a pleasure to own. And, in even better news, if you don’t want to splash out on a “full” version they are available in various fractional versions – halves, quarters and 10ths.

As always we suggest that you buy on a “Best Value” basis avoiding proof, collectors, special editions and all the other tricks of the trade designed to entice you into spending more. Remember that, with very few exceptions your retained value will simply be that of the gold content of your coin when you come to sell. The example pictured is an encapsulated and certified coin which, whilst nice and adds security and safety to your coin, does not really add actual extra value when you come to sell to the likes of us.
