This week has seen a glut of watches of all kinds. Pocket watches in gold or silver, ladies wrist watches with 9ct or even 18ct gold cases and a fair few gentleman’s wrist watches usually featuring the age old “thank you for your service of X years” engraved into their golden backs. Usually deeply out of fashion, a bit battered and long since having given up the “tick” and the “tock” part of their job descriptions! Add to that the fact that they are usually beyond economic repair they usually end up taking up space in a dark and dusty draw somewhere until we come along to liberate them.

To do so we do have to indulge in a bit of vandalism as the movements themselves are of no value (as a rule) so they get unceremoniously prised out before we “recycle” the precious metals. More often than not the piece will display it’s golden or silver credentials in the form of a hallmark of some kind and we can ascertain a value quite easily. Others are hiding their light under a bushel and need to be convinced to give up their secrets. It’s tasteless work but someone has to do it if the real value is to be realised.

So if you have a stash of timepieces you suspect may be made of gold or silver please do get in touch. We patrol all of Plymouth, South Hams, Torbay, Exeter, West Devon and South East Cornwall and would be happy to come and take a look at your convenience.
