Diary of a Precious Metal Dealer

Early September is traditionally the time we take our late summer holiday just as the school holidays finish as we know that this is a period when things go a little quiet business wise. But, once the tans have been topped it's all hands to action stations as pent up demand for our services erupts upon our return.

Wednesday saw us focussed on Plymouth and a visit to a client looking to sell two gold Britannias. He had previously been into town and been offered quite a cheeky price for them before getting in touch with us. Naturally we try and offer a fair market price so a meeting was arranged at his home address. As you might expect we are very careful when it comes to testing items we buy as any mistake can be very costly. In the case of coins and bars we use a Sigma EMP testing device which is a very reliable tester of these types of items. In this case all was good and we paid the client on the spot by instant bank transfer. Once it arrived in his account we took receipt of the Britannias. Happy client and some nice coins ready to be sold on.

Thursday saw us focus on the Torbay and Exeter area. An early doors start saw us drop into a client in the Torbay area to sell three gold Britannias; yes, two of the ones we had purchased the day before and one extra from stock. We tend to keep a supply of gold sovereigns and Britannisas to hand for immediate sale. The client was more than happy as, our selling price is pitched to beat even the most competitive online sellers plus he got to see and touch the items on offer before paying for them.

No rest for the wicked though - straight from Torbay and over to Newton Abbot to buy a silver bracelet from a metal detectorist. Not a big purchase but a useful contact for the future no doubt.A modern, 925 silver bracelet rather than anything antique - we are careful not to buy anything that might be considered "treasure"!

Bovey Tracey next. An existing customer working through a probate clearance. A small fistful of mixed gold and silver scrap jewellery. All tested with our specialist testing equipment and few grams of broken, old jewellery converted into cash in the bank in less than 30 minutes.

Exmouth next - PITA roadworks along the A38 and on the outskirts of Exmouth add extra travel time but needs must when the devil rides and all that. Met a lovely lady who was having a clear out. A few hundred pounds worth of scrap silver - spoons, medals, coins and nursing buckles plus a small handful of old gold chains along with an old gold filling that was worth more than expected. Once again, all tested and checked before paying over an amount that took the client by surprise - in a good way of course!

All in all a busy day and a decent amount of gold and silver to be recycled. Friday looks like a busy "admin" day!
